Below are selected works from the group show Smash the Patriarchy featuring printmaker Jessica Evett, and potters Kayla Morgan, and Evalee Campbell.
Artist Statement:
Artist Evalee Campbell’s works in cardboard and clay explores the spaces bound to and beyond patriarchy through the examination of the queen chess piece as a symbol of empowerment. Dominance, foresight and versatility are all qualities of le donna in Queen’s Chess. Historically, the queen's new found power in the game was thought to be a reflection of the changing dynamic of the regency and early feminist leanings. Today queen iconography is much more expansive. Untethered to archaic ideas of ownership, power, or even gender, when we step away from patriarchy we can begin to envision a better version of the world.
Participants were asked to respond to the prompt: Can you imagine the Matriarchy?
